Tepezcohuite Extract
Our secret ingredient in Mayan Dew is known in Mexico as Tepezcohuite (Pronounced Te-pez-co-wheete) and is also called the “Skin Tree” by the Ancient Maya because of its amazing properties. We make our own Tepezcohuite Extract in house combined with Organic Fair Trade Vanilla Pods and Organic Vegetable Glycerin. Native to Southern Mexico and South America the tree bark and root bark have been used for centuries to promote skin health. The essential parts in its chemical make up are Flavonoids (antioxidants), Lipids (boosts moisture barrier/hydration of cells), Tannins (reduces inflammation/astringent) and Polyphenols/Micro Nutrients (Zinc, Magnesium and Iron) all playing a role in repairing and protecting the epidermis and inhibiting the degradation of collagen. The nutrients in Tepezcohuite help to preserve skins natural hyaluronic acid production and ability to retain moisture.
Prickly Pear Extract
Prickly Pear Extract (also known as Nopal Cactus) is derived from the Oputina species of Cacti and is originally native to the deserts of Mexico. Prickly Pears are rich in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Potassium and also contains Tannins (reduces inflammation/astringent) Betanin (a phytochemical that protects the plant by acting as an antioxidant) and Flavonoids (also antioxidants). This incredible Cactus survives in the most arid of climates and is a genius at being able to hold moisture/water within its cells. We carefully curated Mayan Dew to benefit from the amazing properties of Prickly Pear.
Yucca Extract
Native to deserts in the Americas, Yucca is also another plant that has adapted to live in harsh environments, using its ability to store water within its cells to survive making it an excellent skin conditioning ingredient. It is rich in Vitamins A, B and C, Minerals (Iron, Copper, Manganese and Phosphorus) Amino Acids (free radical fighters) and Saponins (carbohydrates/sugars in plants that have calming properties and stimulate the natural synthesis of Hyaluronic Acid) These nutrients aid in moisture retention and give a soothing and softening property to Mayan Dew.
Agave Extract
Another desert beauty in Mayan Dew is Organic Agave Ferment Filtrate. Native to Mexico Agave was revered by the Aztecs and Maya and has expertly evolved, like Prickly Pear and Yucca, by developing a very unique water storage system and ability to stabilise its cell membranes against environmental stressors. Some of the beneficial nutrients in Agave are Calcium, Vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D , K and Saponins (a group of carbohydrates known to stimulate the natural synthesis of Hyaluronic Acid). Agave is also well known for its nectar and it’s this natural sugar content (fructose and glucose) that also gives this plant its hydrating property. Sugars are hygroscopic and can draw moisture close to the skin. When combined with the other extracts in Mayan Dew it creates a wonderful synergistic blend of hydrating botanicals.
Chaparral Extract
Chaparral (also known as Creosote) is found in The Americas, specifically in the deserts of South West America/North Mexico and is another plant that has adapted extremely well to desert life and is able to thrive in harsh, ever changing temperatures. Native Americans have used this plant for its properties for centuries. Like Agave and Yucca, Chaparral contains Saponins which are classed as a natural carbohydrate/sugar in plants and have been shown to sooth skin and have antioxidant properties. Another constituent of Chaparral is Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid (NDGA), an antioxidant compound, which research suggests can reduce inflammation and fight free radical damage to skin.
Hibiscus Extract
Beautiful, vibrant Hibiscus is renowned for its nutrient dense composition and has a reputation for encouraging healthy looking skin. Its origins are thought to be from the Pacific Islands and Asia. Antioxidants, Vitamin C and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (a water soluble acid) are three of the most known and prised constituents in Hibiscus. Vitamin C is vital to collagen production in cells, AHA’s encourage a gentle, delicate way of skin renewal and Antioxidants such as Flavanoids help fight free radical damage. Hibiscus makes the perfect restorative extract in Mayan Dew and encourages a smoother, brighter looking complexion.
Vanilla Pod Extract
Mesoamerica is the birthplace of exotic Vanilla Planifolia (the Vanilla Orchid) and history has shown it was incredibly important to the Aztec and Maya, not just in ancient Cacao Ceremonies but for skin healing too. Our Organic, fair-trade Vanilla Extract is made in house and is combined with Tepezcohuite and Organic Vegetable Glycerin. Vanilla is known for its rich source of B Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid) which may help play an important role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. It is also full of Polyphenols (micro nutrients) and Antioxidants which can aid in protecting skin against free radicals and environmental stressors and the sweet scent of Vanilla adds a beautiful, relaxing quality to Mayan Dew.
Orange Blossom Water
Our Organic Orange Blossom Water is steam distilled and we believe this is a superior way of extracting the nutrients of this wonderful tree as it gently imparts the benefits without any allergens, making it perfect for all skin types. Orange Blossom Water has been used as a nourishing beauty treatment for centuries and is thought to have calming, anti-inflammatory properties. Gentle on skin, it hydrates beautifully and because of its sweet, delicate, floral scent it can have a very soothing affect on the senses.
Sugar Beet Extract
Our Sugar Beet Extract is Ecocertifed from a renewable source and is a wonderful natural humectant (draws in moisture/reduces the loss of moisture) and helps hydrate skin due to its abundant source of saccharides (a skin replenishing organic compound containing sugar or sugars) and is a class of Osmolyte, which is a small molecule that plays an active roll in water regulation and helps maintain optimal hydration levels. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Mayan Dew was formulated to lessen TWEL (Transepidermal Water Loss/water loss through the epidermis) and Sugar Beet Extract plays an important roll in encouraging moisture retention in skin cells and providing multi level hydration.
Vegetable Glycerin
Our Organic Vegetable Glycerin is one of nature’s best humectants as it attracts and locks moisture into skin. It has incredible softening and smoothing properties and improves suppleness with regular application. Research suggests it can mimic skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) and help replenish dehydrated skin and fortify skin’s barrier function. It blends beautifully with the hydrating ingredients in Mayan Dew, giving skin a soft to the touch finish.
Sodium Hyaluronate
Our Vegan Hyaluronic Acid (INCI name Sodium Hyaluronate) is approved by the Soil Association and is also Cosmos Certified. It is made by producing enzymes from a bacteria based biofermentation process. Hyaluronic Acid is famed from its ability to increase moisture levels in the skin and also reduce moisture loss. Because of its soothing property it can also reduce inflammation, soften and elevate dry skin. Combined together with our other naturally moisturising ingredients it adds the perfect hydrating feel to Mayan Dew.
Aqua
We use Purified Water along with Organic Orange Blossom Water as our aqueous base for Mayan Dew. They both act as a solvent for our botanical extracts/ingredients and allow them to impart their nutrients into the formula.
Xanthan Gum
Xanthan Gum is produced by a fermentation process and is classed as a Polysaccharide (carbohydrate molecules). It has many different functions in cosmetics and is mainly used as a thickener in aqueous formulas or as a binder and emulsion stabiliser. Xanthan Gum is also a skin conditioning agent.
Sodium Benzoate & Potassium Sorbate
Any water based cosmetic product MUST have a preservative system that protects the formula from yeast, mould and bacteria. Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate work together alongside Leuconostoc Radish Ferment Filtrate as our broad spectrum preservative system.
Leuconostoc Radish Ferment Filtrate
This is an anti-microbial protectant derived from Radish Root Ferment and is used as part of the preservative system in our botanical extracts.
Citric Acid
We use a dilution of Citric Acid in Mayan Dew as a PH Adjuster to keep the PH level in harmony with the Preservative System, giving it maximum efficacy.
Superoxide Dismutase/Soybean Peroxidase
These are both plant enzymes used as part of the Preservative System in our Organic Agave Ferment Filtrate.
Patch Test
We always recommend to do a skin patch test prior to using any product. It can be very exciting to open a new cosmetic purchase and use it straight away but we advise against this in case of any negative reactions. Patch testing is easy; place a small drop of Mayan Dew onto the inside of your arm, where the crease of your elbow is, and rub in gently, leave for 24hrs to make sure there is no allergic reaction. Do not use if any reaction occurs. Please also make sure you read the full ingredients list in case of any known allergies.
